We were in Deadwood today. It's beautiful, well preserved, clean, friendly. Bullock's Hotel is still there, so is the China Town restaurant and the Franklin Hotel. And Goldberg's saloon, where the photo was taken, is still there.
But walk into any building and the truth is revealed: Deadwood is just one big casino. Every store is a casino, no matter what the street sign says it is. Entire blocks of stores have been hollowed out, interior passages created, and the building filled with thousands of slot machines.
The wild west has been tamed. The Indians won. That's probably how it should be.
